Nine miles, and closer options exist
Outpatient Addiction Treatment Near Blackwood, NJ
We Are Probably Not Your Closest Option
Blackwood is the farthest town we have written one of these pages for. Our office is at 1044 NJ-73 in Berlin, between nine and ten miles from the center of Blackwood, and the drive takes about 20 minutes. Gloucester Township and its neighbors have other licensed outpatient programs, and some of them are closer to you than we are.
We would rather say that now than have you work it out for yourself in your second month. Intensive outpatient starts at five days a week and steps down to three, and partial care is five throughout, so the drive is not a one-time cost. Forty minutes of round trip is manageable for most people with a car of their own. It is a real problem for someone sharing one car with a working spouse, and it is close to impossible for someone whose license is suspended.
So here is a fair way to decide.
The drive is worth it when the schedule and the clinical fit line up: you can attend on weekdays between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., you want gender-specific groups or groups for people carrying a psychiatric diagnosis alongside substance use, or your plan is in network here and not at the closer program. We verify insurance before you commit to anything, so that last one takes a phone call.
Choose closer when getting a ride is the fragile part of the plan. Evening hours would also rule us out, because we do not have any, and so would NJ FamilyCare, which we do not accept. The SAMHSA locator at findtreatment.gov lists licensed programs by distance from your ZIP code and lets you filter by payment type.
Either way, know what we are. South Jersey Recovery Program is outpatient only, so detox and residential treatment are not things you would get here. If one of those is the piece you need first, we help you arrange it and can pick up outpatient care when you come out.
Blackwood Means Gloucester Township
Blackwood is a mailing address and a neighborhood. The municipality is Gloucester Township, which also takes in Erial, Glendora, Blenheim, Chews Landing, and part of the Sicklerville ZIP code. Your municipal court, your police department, and the state’s treatment statistics all go by the township.
The township has a particular place in how Camden County handles addiction.
Project SAVE Began in Your Municipal Court
In June 2014 Gloucester Township put a substance use counselor in its municipal court. A person facing a low-level, non-violent charge could meet the counselor voluntarily and be connected to treatment. The township called it Project SAVE, for Substance Abuse Visionary Effort. By the township’s own count, 158 people had been offered the SAVE advocate’s help between June 2014 and the fall of 2018, and 131 of them, 82 percent, took part in some level of treatment.
Camden County then took the idea countywide. By March 2024 the county reported more than 10,000 referrals to treatment through the program since the countywide version began in 2019. It is voluntary, and the county describes it as available regardless of ability to pay.
If a court date in Gloucester Township is what brought you to this page, the person to ask about Project SAVE is the court administrator. We are not part of the program. Taking clients whose treatment a court has ordered is a different thing, and we do that; the documentation the court wants is handled by our case management team.
The County’s Addiction Office Is in Blackwood
The Camden County Office of Mental Health and Addiction is at 512 Lakeland Road in Blackwood, phone (856) 374-6361. It does not provide treatment. It helps county residents work out what services exist and how to reach them, which makes it a reasonable first call for someone who does not know where to start.
What Gloucester Township’s 518 Admissions Actually Tell You
Only one municipality in Camden County sent more residents to substance use treatment in 2024 than Gloucester Township did. That was the city of Camden, with 2,326 admissions against the township’s 518. Cherry Hill is the bigger municipality, 74,553 residents to Gloucester Township’s 66,034 in the 2020 Census, and it had 363. The figures are the state Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services’, counted by the municipality where the person lives and published in the 2024 Substance Use Overview for Camden County in January 2026.
| Primary drug | Gloucester Twp. | Share of township | Share countywide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alcohol | 223 | 43% | 37% |
| Heroin | 138 | 27% | 27% |
| Other opiates | 47 | 9% | 11% |
| Cocaine or crack | 44 | 8% | 10% |
| Marijuana | 24 | 5% | 6% |
| Methamphetamine | 14 | 3% | 3% |
| Other or unknown | 28 | 5% | 6% |
A high count is not self-explanatory. An admission is an event rather than a person, so a resident admitted three times counts three times, and only admissions to licensed programs that report to the state are in the data at all. More admissions can mean more people in trouble. It can also mean more people getting through a door, and a township that has had a counselor sitting in its courtroom since 2014 may simply be sending more of them there.
What the table does show is the mix. Heroin and other opiates together are 36 percent of the township’s admissions. For opioid use disorder, medication is a central part of treatment rather than an add-on, and medication assisted treatment is part of the plan here where it is appropriate.
One danger goes with a mix like that, and it is worth knowing whether or not you ever call us. Tolerance drops quickly during any stretch without opioids, whether that stretch is detox, a hospital stay, or a week in jail. Going back to the old dose afterward is how a great many overdoses happen, and fentanyl in the supply makes the margin thinner still. That is the argument for having naloxone in the house before anyone needs it, and somewhere other than the pocket of the person most likely to need it. Naloxone365, the state program, puts it in participating pharmacies free and anonymously for anyone 14 or older, and no prescription is required in New Jersey either way.
Alcohol is still the largest single line, at 43 percent. Daily heavy drinking and daily benzodiazepine use are the two most common cases where stopping abruptly on your own is dangerous: withdrawal from either can cause seizures and can be fatal without medical management. That calls for medically supervised withdrawal first, and we help arrange it.
The Route, and Why There Is No Bus
From the center of Blackwood, take Blackwood-Clementon Road east. It becomes Berlin Road through Clementon and brings you to Route 73 in Berlin. Turn south on Route 73 and we are under two miles down, at 1044 NJ-73. From Erial or the southern end of the township, Berlin-Cross Keys Road to Route 73 is usually faster.
We do not know of a direct bus. The NJ Transit routes through Blackwood are the 400 (Sicklerville to Philadelphia along the Black Horse Pike, through Camden), the 403 (Camden to Lindenwold to Turnersville), and the 459 (Voorhees Town Center to Camden County College to the Avandale Park and Ride). None of them runs to Route 73 in Berlin. So most people who come to us from Blackwood drive or get a ride, and there is parking at the office.
The office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and clinical staff are on site 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Partial care runs 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and IOP runs 9:30 a.m. to noon.
Overdose, and the Nearest Emergency Rooms
If someone may have overdosed, call 911 first. Then give naloxone if you have it, and if there is no response within 2 to 3 minutes give another dose in the other nostril and keep going until help arrives. Stay with them. Naloxone reverses opioids only, and New Jersey’s supply increasingly contains xylazine and medetomidine, which it does not reverse, so give it anyway and keep waiting for the ambulance even if the person stays sleepy. For thoughts of suicide, call or text 988, or 911 if someone is in immediate danger or has already been hurt or taken something.
The nearest hospital emergency departments to Blackwood and the rest of Gloucester Township are Jefferson Stratford Hospital, at 18 East Laurel Road in Stratford, and Jefferson Washington Township Hospital, at 435 Hurffville-Cross Keys Road in Turnersville. From Blackwood, Chews Landing, Glendora, Blenheim and Erial alike, Stratford is the closer of the two. Neither is in Berlin, and neither is affiliated with us. Our phone is an admissions line answered on weekdays, not a crisis line.
If You Decide to Call
The number is (856) 788-6914, or you can send a message. Expect questions about your substance use, your mental health history, your medical situation, and the shape of your week. Say that you are coming from Blackwood and ask outright whether the schedule works with the transportation you actually have, because that is the question this whole page is about. The admissions page lays out what happens after that.
If a closer program or a different level of care is the better answer, we will say so. And if you would rather talk to someone who is not a treatment provider first, ReachNJ is at 1-844-732-2465 and the SAMHSA National Helpline is at 1-800-662-4357.
Questions people from Blackwood ask us
How far is South Jersey Recovery Program from Blackwood?
Between nine and ten miles. From the center of Blackwood the usual route is Blackwood-Clementon Road east through Clementon, then Route 73 south to 1044 NJ-73 in Berlin. Plan on about 20 minutes.
Are there treatment programs closer to Blackwood than yours?
Yes. Gloucester Township and the towns around it have other licensed outpatient programs, and for treatment you attend several days a week, closer is a real advantage. The SAMHSA locator at findtreatment.gov lists licensed programs by distance from your ZIP code.
Where did Project SAVE start?
In Gloucester Township. In June 2014 the township's municipal court began offering people facing low-level charges a voluntary meeting with a substance use counselor. Camden County later expanded the program to municipal courts countywide. We are not part of Project SAVE.
Is there a bus from Blackwood to Berlin?
We do not know of a direct one. The NJ Transit routes through Blackwood run toward Camden and Philadelphia, toward Lindenwold and Turnersville, or east to Voorhees Town Center, not toward Route 73 in Berlin. Most clients from Blackwood drive or get a ride.
